Dog Ear Cleaning: How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears Safely

Dog ear cleaning sounds simple until you’re holding a squirmy dog and a bottle of solution, wondering how deep is too deep. The short answer: not deep at all. Most of the job happens on the outside of the ear, and the safe method takes about five minutes. At Topanga Pet Resort, ear cleaning is part of our grooming and bath visits. This guide covers how to clean dog ears at home, what to leave out of the routine, and when to stop and call your vet.

Key Takeaways

  • Use a vet-approved ear cleaner, never a homemade mix, and keep cotton swabs out of the canal.
  • Fill the ear, massage the base for about 30 seconds, let your dog shake, then wipe only what you can see.
  • Healthy ears rarely need frequent cleaning, but floppy ears and swimmers usually need it more often.
  • Redness, a sour smell, discharge, or head shaking point to a vet visit, not more cleaning.
  • Practice handling early and keep treats close so cleaning stays calm.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather everything first, because once the cleaner is in the ear, you won’t want to go looking for supplies. You need:

  • A veterinarian-approved ear cleaning solution
  • Cotton balls or gauze squares, not swabs
  • Soft treats
  • A towel, since head shakes fling cleaner everywhere

Pick a spot that’s easy to wipe down, like a bathroom or mudroom, and choose a calm moment, such as after a walk. If your dog has never had its ears handled, spend a few days just touching them and handing out treats. Calm handling is easier to teach young, and our puppy training program covers the socialization and impulse control that go with it.

How to Clean Dog Ears Step by Step

The method below follows the approach Cornell’s veterinary college describes. Work on one ear at a time.

  1. Check the ear first. Healthy ear skin looks pale pink and smells mild. If you see redness, swelling, or discharge, skip the cleaning and call your vet.
  2. Lift the ear flap and squeeze the cleaner into the canal until it’s full. Don’t let the bottle tip touch the ear.
  3. Hold the flap closed and massage the base of the ear for about 30 seconds. You should hear a squishing sound.
  4. Step back and let your dog shake its head, which brings loosened debris up and out.
  5. Wipe the inside of the ear flap and the part of the canal you can see with cotton or gauze. Stop there.
  6. Reward your dog, then repeat on the other ear.

Gentle handling matters as much as technique. If your dog pulls away or cries out, stop. Ear cleaning is one of the services in our grooming and bath visits, which is a good fallback for dogs that won’t hold still.

What to Avoid and How Often to Clean

Skip cotton swabs, which can pack debris deeper or injure the canal. Skip homemade rinses, rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide too, since they can irritate the ear. AKC’s ear-cleaning guide covers the same basics.

How often depends on the dog. A healthy ear with no odor needs little more than a look. Dogs with floppy ears, hairy canals, or a love of water usually need cleaning more often, because moisture and wax collect. If your dog plays hard in the yard or swims, check the ears at pickup after supervised daycare days.

Signs It’s Time to See a Vet

Cleaning won’t fix an infection, and it can hurt an inflamed ear. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes ear infections as causing head shaking, scratching at the ear, odor, discharge, and redness. Call your vet if you see any of those, or if your dog yelps when you touch the ear.

Routine checks catch trouble sooner, which is one reason regular grooming supports your dog’s health. Heading out of town? If your dog is on ear medication, bring it labeled and tell the team before an overnight boarding stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Clean My Dog’s Ears?

Most healthy dogs need ear cleaning only now and then, not on a fixed schedule. Dogs with floppy ears, hair in the canal, or a habit of swimming usually need it more often. If the ears look clean and smell normal, leave them alone and ask your vet what rhythm fits your dog.

Can I Use Cotton Swabs to Clean My Dog’s Ears?

No. Swabs can push wax and debris deeper and can injure the canal or eardrum. Use cotton balls or gauze to wipe only the parts you can see, and let the cleaning solution and your dog’s head shake do the rest of the work.

How Do You Clean a Dog’s Ears at Home?

Fill the canal with a vet-approved ear cleaner, massage the base of the ear for about 30 seconds, let your dog shake, then wipe the visible part of the ear with gauze. Never go into the canal itself. If your dog flinches or the ear looks red, stop.

Why Do My Dog’s Ears Smell?

A mild waxy smell is normal. A sour, yeasty, or foul odor, especially with redness, discharge, or head shaking, points to a possible infection. That needs a vet’s exam and treatment, and cleaning an infected ear at home can hurt, so call your vet first.

Does Topanga Pet Resort Clean Dogs’ Ears?

Yes. Ear cleaning is part of our grooming and bath services, and grooming can be added to a daycare or boarding visit. Call us to ask about your dog’s coat and ears before you book, and we’ll tell you what to expect.

Keep Ear Care Simple

Good dog ear cleaning is mostly restraint: clean what you can see, use the right solution, and let your vet handle anything that looks or smells wrong. If you’d rather not do it yourself, we’re glad to help. Call us at (888) 818-1622 or talk to our team about your dog.

What a place! My wife and I visited a dear friend's dog at Topanga Pet Resort this past weekend. When we encountered Ivy, a precious 2 year old Pitty, she seemed very relaxed and well fed. We found the boarding facility to truly feel like a resort. The surrounding trees and ample greenery make the place very serene. All the dogs that were being housed and those who were coming in for training seemed genuinely happy to be there. Additionally, we met a couple of the trainers during our visit there and they were extremely knowledgeable and compassionate towards their canine friends. If you need a place to take your furry friend, Topanga Pet Resort is the place!

Our experience with Topanga Pet Resort was absolutely amazing. We were thoroughly impressed with how they handled everything from start to finish. The staff was kind, professional, attentive, and genuinely cared about our pet’s comfort and well-being. The facility was clean, organized, and gave us peace of mind the entire time. Communication was excellent, and it was clear our pet was being treated with love and attention. It’s hard to find a place you can fully trust with your fur baby, but this team truly exceeded expectations. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality pet care!

This is my 2nd time using them. First time was for 6 weeks and it went so well I went back for a 3 week stay for my two dogs. They are great at training puppy's, taking care of my big dog, and most importantly training my wife on how to walk a dog ;)

Amazing place to take your pet! We met with them for a meet and greet since our dog is pretty nervous around new people and has never been left, but they did everything they could to make sure he was comfortable, didn’t push his boundaries and took their time thoroughly answering all of our questions! They do a great job of meeting every individual pup’s needs and have excellent trainers on the property at all times! I can definitely feel good about bringing my dog here for boarding ❤️ prices are also very reasonable and they give lots of outside time

Topanga Pet Resort — absolute love???? I can say with full confidence: these people REALLY know what they’re doing. I’ve left my dog Chuck there several times, and every time he comes home happy, calm, and full of good energy — like he spent time with friends, not just in a boarding facility. They don’t just watch the dogs, they train them, guide them, and do it with heart. You can feel how much respect and care they give to every animal. We also use their grooming regularly, and Chuck always comes out looking like a handsome glossy boy — fresh, clean, and proud of himself. I fully trust them. This place is honestly the best thing I’ve found for my dog. Thank you for caring for Chuck as if he were your own. ❤️❤️❤️
