Ultimate Dog Boarding Checklist in Los Angeles

A detailed checklist ensures your dog’s safety and comfort during a boarding stay. This guide helps Los Angeles owners prepare by outlining health requirements, packing essentials, behavioural tips, and drop-off and pick-up procedures. Follow these steps to improve your dog’s boarding experience while you’re away.

What Are the Essential Vaccination and Health Requirements for Dog Boarding in Los Angeles?

Before boarding, confirm the vaccination and health requirements set by Los Angeles facilities. These rules protect your pet and other animals on site. Most kennels require proof of current core vaccines, including Rabies; DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza); Bordetella (kennel cough); Leptospirosis; and Canine Influenza.

These vaccinations reduce the risk of infectious disease spread in communal pet settings.

Why Vaccinations are Crucial for Dog Boarding Safety

Kennels (overnight and daycare facilities alike) present unique opportunities for pathogens: a dispersed group of animals comes together to bark, yip, howl, cough, sneeze, urinate, throw up, and fling diarrhea on the walls in unison. From a pathogen’s point of view, it is like arriving at the land of opportunity! Outbreaks do happen. Sometimes, it is a low-virulence pathogen such as papillomavirus,1but the stakes can be higher. During a cluster of canine influenza outbreaks in Ontario, Canada, that included daycare and overnight care locations, several dogs died.2In a series of leptospirosis cases in dogs in Arizona,3overnight boarding increased the risk of disease almost three-fold. At daycare facilities, the risk was a whopping 7.7 times greater.

Meeting these requirements speeds check-in and protects animals in care. Topanga Pet Resort, a professional dog boarding and training facility in the Los Angeles area, provides personalised care and can answer specific health questions.

Which Vaccinations Must Dogs Have Before Boarding?

Typical required vaccinations include the following:

  1. Rabies: A mandatory vaccine for all dogs.
  2. DHPP: This combination vaccine protects against several serious diseases.
  3. Bordetella: Essential for preventing kennel cough, especially in communal settings.
  4. Leptospirosis: Important for dogs that may be exposed to contaminated water.
  5. Canine Influenza: Protects against the canine flu virus.

These vaccines protect your dog and other pets at the facility.

How to Prepare and Provide Vaccination Records and Health Certificates

Gather clear vaccination records and any required health certificates before arrival. Bring physical copies at drop-off so staff can verify your dog meets facility requirements.

What Are the Key Packing Essentials and Feeding Instructions for Boarding Your Dog?

Packing familiar items and clear feeding instructions improves your dog’s comfort and supports staff in delivering consistent care.

What Items Should You Include in Your Dog’s Boarding Packing List?

Dog owner's packing essentials for boarding, including a blanket, food containers, and medications

Include the following essentials when you pack for boarding:

  • Familiar Items: A favourite blanket, toy, or item with home scent for comfort.
  • Labeled Food: Your dog’s regular food in a clearly labelled container.
  • Medications: All medications in labelled packaging or their original containers.

These items help your dog settle and make it easier for staff to maintain routine care.

Familiar items and enrichment toys are effective tools to reduce stress and support positive behaviour in new environments.

Reducing Boarding Stress with Dog Enrichment Toys

AbstractStress is something felt by all creatures in many different situations. For dogs, stress can come about by being in an unknown environment, near unfamiliar people and other dogs. When dogs are stressed, they exhibit behaviors that can fall into four different categories: posture, vocalizations, activity, and aggression. This research was looking to see if the use of enrichment toys, meant to stimulate a dog’s mind, could be a useful tool in combating behaviors caused by stress.

How to Provide Clear Feeding and Medication Instructions for Boarding Staff

Provide pre-measured meals in clearly labelled containers with a written feeding schedule. Give medications in original containers with a printed administration schedule to avoid errors.

How Can Behavioral Preparation and Training Enhance Your Dog’s Boarding Experience?

Behavioral preparation reduces stress and improves adaptability. Dogs familiar with short separations and new settings generally transition more smoothly into boarding routines.

What Behavioral Tips Help Dogs Adjust to Boarding Facilities?

Use these practical steps to help your dog adjust:

  • Familiarization: Make short practice visits to the facility to build comfort.
  • Bring Familiar Items: Pack a favourite blanket or toy for reassurance.
  • Exercise Before Boarding: Give a long walk or active play session to reduce excess energy.

These measures reduce anxiety and make the boarding stay more comfortable for your dog.

How Does Training Integration Support Boarding Readiness and Safety?

Integrating training into your dog’s routine reinforces basic commands and builds confidence, which helps staff manage care and improves your dog’s safety during boarding.

What Are the Drop-off, Pick-up Procedures, and Boarding Policies at Los Angeles Dog Kennels?

Familiarise yourself with the facility’s drop-off and pick-up procedures for a smooth visit.

When and How Should You Drop Off and Pick Up Your Dog?

Confirm the facility’s drop-off and pick-up times before arrival. Arriving on time minimises stress for you and your dog and helps staff keep to schedule.

What Are Common Boarding Facility Policies and How Do They Ensure Pet Safety?

Typical facility policies include the following:

  • Vaccination Requirements: Ensuring all dogs are up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Emergency Procedures: Staff are trained in emergency protocols to ensure pet safety.
  • Health Checks: Regular health checks are conducted to monitor the well-being of all pets.

These policies create a safer, healthier environment for dogs in care.

For dogs needing specialized attention, consider aggressive dog training programs to help ensure a safer boarding experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my dog has special dietary needs?

Notify the facility in advance and provide detailed written instructions about your dog’s diet, including allergies and portion sizes. Bring regular food in labelled containers and pack extra for delays. Confirm the facility’s policy on special diets before booking.

How can I help my dog cope with separation anxiety during boarding?

Gradually accustom your dog to short separations and reward calm behaviour. Stay calm and brief at drop-off to reduce stress. Bring familiar items, such as a favourite toy or blanket, for comfort.

Are there any specific health checks performed by boarding facilities?

Most facilities perform an arrival health check looking for signs of illness, skin issues, or parasites and require vaccination proof to prevent contagious disease. Regular monitoring during the stay is common; ask your chosen facility for details on their health protocols.

What should I do if my dog gets sick while boarding?

If your dog becomes ill while boarding, the facility should contact you promptly and arrange veterinary care. Provide your veterinarian’s contact information and any medical instructions in advance, and review the facility’s illness and emergency care policies before boarding.

Can I visit the boarding facility before making a reservation?

Yes. Touring the facility lets you evaluate the environment, meet staff, and observe cleanliness and animal handling. Many kennels welcome prospective clients for a tour so you can make an informed decision about your dog’s care.

What should I do if my dog has behavioral issues?

Inform the facility before your reservation so staff can plan appropriate handling. Consider enrolling your dog in training prior to boarding to address specific issues. Ask whether the facility offers behavioural support or specialised training during stays.

How can I ensure my dog receives enough exercise while boarding?

Ask about the facility’s daily activity schedule and options for playtime, walks, or socialisation. If your dog has high energy, request additional exercise sessions and provide staff with details about your dog’s exercise needs so they can tailor activities accordingly.

Conclusion

Preparing your dog for boarding in Los Angeles protects their safety and comfort and reduces stress for you both. What a place! My wife and I visited a dear friend's dog at Topanga Pet Resort this past weekend. When we encountered Ivy, a precious 2 year old Pitty, she seemed very relaxed and well fed. We found the boarding facility to truly feel like a resort. The surrounding trees and ample greenery make the place very serene. All the dogs that were being housed and those who were coming in for training seemed genuinely happy to be there. Additionally, we met a couple of the trainers during our visit there and they were extremely knowledgeable and compassionate towards their canine friends. If you need a place to take your furry friend, Topanga Pet Resort is the place!

Our experience with Topanga Pet Resort was absolutely amazing. We were thoroughly impressed with how they handled everything from start to finish. The staff was kind, professional, attentive, and genuinely cared about our pet’s comfort and well-being. The facility was clean, organized, and gave us peace of mind the entire time. Communication was excellent, and it was clear our pet was being treated with love and attention. It’s hard to find a place you can fully trust with your fur baby, but this team truly exceeded expectations. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality pet care!

This is my 2nd time using them. First time was for 6 weeks and it went so well I went back for a 3 week stay for my two dogs. They are great at training puppy's, taking care of my big dog, and most importantly training my wife on how to walk a dog ;)

Amazing place to take your pet! We met with them for a meet and greet since our dog is pretty nervous around new people and has never been left, but they did everything they could to make sure he was comfortable, didn’t push his boundaries and took their time thoroughly answering all of our questions! They do a great job of meeting every individual pup’s needs and have excellent trainers on the property at all times! I can definitely feel good about bringing my dog here for boarding ❤️ prices are also very reasonable and they give lots of outside time

Topanga Pet Resort — absolute love???? I can say with full confidence: these people REALLY know what they’re doing. I’ve left my dog Chuck there several times, and every time he comes home happy, calm, and full of good energy — like he spent time with friends, not just in a boarding facility. They don’t just watch the dogs, they train them, guide them, and do it with heart. You can feel how much respect and care they give to every animal. We also use their grooming regularly, and Chuck always comes out looking like a handsome glossy boy — fresh, clean, and proud of himself. I fully trust them. This place is honestly the best thing I’ve found for my dog. Thank you for caring for Chuck as if he were your own. ❤️❤️❤️
